Zimkhita Buwa

In one sentence: What motivates you?

The ability to make a difference and impact other people’s lives, whether it’s family, friends, colleagues, peers in the industry, etc. My motto has always been, “Lift Others and you will Rise!”

In two sentences: in your opinion, why do diversity and digitalization belong together?

Strategy, mindset, and culture are the three common themes that come up when it comes to digitalization and diversity. For digitization to be successful, a diverse team with different perspectives needs to be actively formed.

In three sentences: Do you have a role model? If yes, who and why?

My family is my role model! Whether it’s my hubby, who is running his own business and overcomes challenges associated with growing a small business, or my mother, who retired last year but has turned her passion of tutoring into a business. She achieved her first degree in her fifties! My sister is a qualified quantity surveyor, a nearly qualified pharmacist, and became a chartered accountant in her mid-thirties whilst being a mom to two boys! Their passion for striving to be the best the no matter what fuels and inspires me.

Your tip for newcomers and young talent?

Connect with leaders who have been around the block for a while! Do not be afraid to approach leaders for mentorship – people are always willing to help.

Invest in growing your skills; courses are important but nothing beats real experience. If you’re not in leadership in your professional role, why not volunteer in the community? There are professional bodies and non-profit organizations that are always on the look-out for an extra pair of hands. Be part of a volunteer committee and you will have the opportunity to hone your skill.

Know that no digital female leader has a smooth journey; challenges will be thrown your way but resilience, perseverance, and authenticity are key traits that you need to keep in your toolbox at all times!
